Website launch: pick your subdomain and domain

This is lesson one because everything else you build accrues to an address. Ten minutes of decisions here save you a rebrand later. There are exactly two decisions: the subdomain you start on today, and the domain your business will live on for the next decade.
Take the subdomain and start
When you create your BrokerFold account you choose a subdomain —
something like janedoe.brokerfold.com. It is live immediately, and it
is a perfectly good construction site: you can pick a template, set your
brand, and build every page before your own domain enters the picture.
Pick a subdomain that is simply your name. Do not agonize; almost nobody
but you will ever type it.
Register the real domain in your own name
The domain is different — take it seriously. Buy it yourself, at a registrar, under your own account and your own email address. Not your brokerage’s account, not a web company’s, not a cousin who “does computers.” Whoever controls the registrar login controls the address your entire online history attaches to, and untangling that later is somewhere between awkward and impossible.
On the name itself, the durable pattern is your name or your farm area, short, and easy to say on the phone. We keep a full decision guide at how to choose a real estate domain name, and one caution worth reading before you buy: terms like REALTOR® and MLS® are trademarks with real rules about domain use. When in doubt, leave them out of the name entirely.
Decide when the domain takes over
You do not have to connect the domain on day one — every plan includes at least one custom domain, and the connection itself is a short, records-only step we walk through in the custom-domain lesson. The rule that matters is this: connect it before you promote the site anywhere. Every visit, link, and month of search history is equity that accrues to whichever address served it. Equity on your subdomain is fine while you build; equity you are actively buying with marketing belongs on the domain you own.
Print is the sharpest version of the rule. A sign rider or business card with a subdomain on it outlives the decision by years.
What done looks like
Done for this lesson is three lines you can verify in five minutes: the subdomain resolves and shows your starter site; the domain is registered, in your own registrar account, with auto-renew on; and the registrar login credentials are stored somewhere you will find them in two years. That last one sounds trivial. It is the single most common blocker we see when an agent finally sits down to connect a domain — the site is ready, and nobody remembers where the domain lives.
The mistake that costs the most
Letting someone else register your domain for you. It is usually offered as a favour and it usually is one — until you change vendors, change brokerages, or the person who holds the login stops answering email. The domain is the one asset in your web presence that must outlive every relationship around it. Ten dollars a year, your account, your name. Then move to choosing a template.
Frequently asked questions
Should I wait until I find the perfect domain name before launching?
No. Build on your included subdomain today and register the domain this week. Perfect-name paralysis delays launches by months; a clear, ownable name registered now beats an ideal one registered never.
Does the subdomain stop working once my own domain is live?
No — it keeps serving alongside your custom domain, so nothing you shared early goes dark. Search engines are pointed at your own domain as the canonical address.
