WordPress IDX website cost

A WordPress IDX website in Canada costs anywhere from about $30 a month to well over $500 a month all-in — the honest number depends on which of five line items you actually fill in: hosting, theme, the plugin or feed service, the build itself, and the maintenance nobody budgets. Sticker comparisons quote the plugin and skip the rest. This page prices the whole stack from published 2026 rate cards (surveyed July 2026, vendors unnamed per our policy), so you can compare the DIY route against a subscription platform configuration for configuration.
The full-stack table
| Line item | Published range (CAD, surveyed 2026-07) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Domain | $15–25 / year | The one genuinely fixed cost |
| Hosting fit for listings | $30–150 / month | Managed WP or VPS tier; shared hosting fails at import time |
| Theme | $0–130 one-time | Premium real estate themes cluster under $100 |
| DDF-lineage plugin | from ~$89 one-time to low monthly fees | Licence models vary; national-pool data |
| RESO / IDX feed service | $49–99+ / month typical; setup fees ~$99–250; premium tiers $169–599 / month | Direct-feed depth; some boards add $2–15+ / month feed surcharges |
| Build labour | $0 (DIY) to $50–200 / hour | Custom search and capture work is where hours accumulate |
| Maintenance & security | $35–300 / month if hired | Updates, backups, monitoring, fixes — or your own evenings |
Three readings of that table. A floor build — one-time DDF plugin, modest hosting, stock theme, you as the maintainer — genuinely runs about $30–60 a month plus your time, and it buys exactly what it costs: pool data, cron freshness, and DIY operations. A middle build with a direct-feed service and hired maintenance lands around $150–400 a month before any custom work. A custom build on a direct feed with real design and capture engineering crosses $500 a month equivalent once you amortize labour — at which point you are operating what a platform operates, with yourself as the vendor.
The two costs the table cannot show
Freshness is a cost line. A cron-synced site is as current as its last successful run; the gap between hourly-or-daily and the minutes-fresh cadence of production direct feeds is invisible on an invoice and fully visible to a buyer comparing your site to a portal. Decide what staleness is worth before deciding what the plugin is worth — the data trade-offs per route are laid out in CREA DDF on WordPress.
Operations is a cost line. Imports fail, plugins go abandonware, updates collide, and photo libraries bloat storage bills — each one is either your maintenance retainer working or your Saturday. The $35–300 monthly maintenance band above is the market pricing that reality; paying $0 for it means you are the one being paid $0.
The boundary this page keeps
This is the DIY-stack price. The subscription-platform price — what hosted realtor websites cost in Canada, ours included at a published $89 CAD a month — is its own page with its own table: realtor website cost Canada. Put the two side by side at the configuration you actually want, add your hours at your hourly value, and the right answer usually declares itself. When the WordPress column still wins, build it with the eyes-open version of the stack above; when it doesn’t, you have just saved yourself a year of finding out the slow way.
Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest way to get MLS listings on WordPress?
A DDF-lineage plugin with a one-time licence on hosting you already pay for — published licences start under $100. The price you pay instead of money is data: the opt-in national pool rather than your board's full inventory, cron-bounded freshness, and no sold data. Cheap is real here; it is just not the same product.
What does WordPress hosting for a listing site need?
Enough database and storage headroom for thousands of listings and their photos, cron reliability for scheduled imports, PHP resources that survive an import batch, and automatic backups. That describes a managed or VPS tier, not the shared plan a brochure site lives on — spec by workload, not by brand.
Is a WordPress IDX site cheaper than a platform over time?
At the bottom of the range, yes — a DDF plugin on modest hosting undercuts any platform subscription. Configured to genuinely match a platform (direct feed service, capture tooling, someone paid to maintain it), the running total lands in the same band or above it, with the difference that you are also the systems operator. Compare configurations, not stickers.
